Bible Journey > Hosea

The “How to Blog” websites tell me not to copy other bloggers but being the crazy rebel that I am, I’m gonna do it anyway. This is my first post on my Bible Journey ala Tony Morgan. I think it would actually be great if other bloggers copied as well and started posting about their devotional time. I’d love to see “Bible Journeys” become as popular as “Worship Confessionals.”

This type of post helps by:

  • Giving others insight into a text that they might not have picked up
  • Looking back to see where your own faith was during a period in your life
  • Keeping you publicly accountable to be in the Word

Here are my thoughts and highlights on Hosea:

  • “Hosea” means “Salvation”
  • “Gomer”means “Complete”
  • During the Reigns of (780-710 BC)
    • Judah’s kings Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah
    • Jeroboam son of Joash was king over Israel
    • Contemporary of Isaiah and Amos
  • Hosea was from the North
  • “This Whole Country Has Become a Whorehouse” sounds like USA
  • Hosea did it – no arguing about God’s command
  • 3 Kids
    • son – Jezreel
    • daughter – No Mercy
    • son – Nobody (Lit. “not my people”)
  • If we insist on flashing our breasts God might rip off our clothes
  • God sets the example for husbands: to court and date their wives
  • Hosea was to love Gomer even when she was in the bed of another man. What does that say about adultery as a reason for divorce?
  • How do we show people God when they are so stuck in sin, “They wouldn’t recognize God if they saw [Him]” ?
  • God’s words are so angry in this book.
  • Speaks over and over again to “Ephraim” as generic for the Northern Kingdom.
  • If you are going to let your children run wild “you might as well kill them outright.”
  • “Sow righteousness reap love.”
  • God does not act fully on his anger because he is Holy.
  • God is the only real god.
  • “If you want to live well,
make sure you understand all of this.
If you know what’s good for you,
you’ll learn this inside and out.
God’s paths get you where you want to go.
    Right-living people walk them easily;
wrong-living people are always tripping and stumbling.”

So go on and be a recklessly individualistic rebel by conforming and copying other bloggers today!
