Getting a God-Sized Vision

This post is part of Setlist Sundays.

WOW!!! – worship totally blew my mind today.

When only God can do it.

My church is seriously in a bad place financially. We have been on a budget freeze since I came on staff 8 months ago. We have cut literally everything out of the budget and still can’t pay all the bills. What has been the most crippling is our mortgage. Our church is currently in 1.3 million dollars of debt. The monthly payment assures we have nothing left for ministry.

This truly is a case where the borrower is slave to the lender. (Prov. 22:4)

Last Tuesday our administrative counsel had our monthly meeting. The crazy idea came up to fundraise all 1.3 million dollars of our debt and exist as a debt-free church! This is a ridiculous impossible dream. We average 100 people in our sanctuary on Sunday morning. There’s no way on Earth we can do it.

And that’s the point – to dream a goal so big only God can do it.

Today Pastor Dorothy Ann totally brought it. She preached on how David picked up 5 smooth stones and then killed Goliath. Then she talked about how 1.3 million dollars of debt is gigantic.

You could hear a pin drop on the carpet in the worship center.

The admin counsel was so excited last Thursday about chasing the Holy Spirit in pursuit of a God-Sized dream that we decided waiting a month until the next meeting was too long. We all agreed to pray and seek God for a week, and then come together again next Tuesday night to share what He’d said to us. This morning Dorothy Ann invited anyone in our church who was passionate about this cause to attend.

A dream this huge isn’t going to happen on its own. God’s not gonna let us sit on the sidelines expecting Him to work without us. We will need to stoop down at the river, pick up our 5 stones and go face to face with the giant before God steps in. I can’t wait until Tuesday.

Will our people be willing to pick up a stone?

Wow, keeping us hanging! Can’t wait to hear about your take on your church’s worship today!

    Wow, that was fast! 🙂

Your church will definitely be in my prayers. We’re not in a great place financially ourselves, but I know that with your church and leadership together dreaming God-sized dreams, God will come through and amaze everyone!

I do know that with God all things are possible. And when God moves, there is going to be a message in there. I am reminded of 2 Chronicles 20 when God was speaking to Jehoshaphat about the battle that set before him. God told him to position, stand, and see God’s salvation. Jehoshaphat sent the worshipers before the warriors and the battle was won with bounty to go along with the victory. Vision must never outway worship. When we worship, our eneimies turn on themselves and we can focus on the fruit of the Spirit and not those annoying foxes 🙂
    Peace and blessings to you.

Hey Billy, You and my worship leader must be on the same wave length or something. This is like the third week that we have sang the same songs as you guys. Not all of the songs but at least 2 each week. How funny.

what was your sermon on this week? maybe the pastors are on the same wave length too.

Nice set, love the Keith Green song.

    This morning we did:

    Lord Reign in me
    He is Exalted
    Living for Jesus
    O Jesus, I Have Promised
    We Beleive

Will be praying for you and your church

Billy, I love that ya’ll are seeking God and moving out of that, not the other way around. God be with you.

i will definately keep you in prayer. our debt is 550,000 with 100 in worship. debt has really strapped us too. when i first arrived, we cut up all the credit cards, closed all the open accounts we had. we don’t finance anything anymore (including the copier!). everything goes through our leadership team. it’s sweet.

i’ve been driving the vision thing too, and was geting pretty frustrated that others weren’t coming on board. well, i had a breakfast meeting a few weeks ago and someone gave me a $10K check to the church, no strings attached. if the vision is compelling, the money will follow.

    keep up the great worship!

Thank you for the prayers guys – they are much needed and are very effective. God is listening. Jan, you totally nailed it seek God and then move instead of moving and then asking God to bless. We are in the chasing posture at Chase Valley.

Wow – that’s awesome. We can relate, we’ve got a little over $10M ourselves. It puts the squeeze … i go back and forth, wondering if we made a mistake by going into debt and becoming a “slave”, yet I see how many we’ve baptized this summer, and that we added another 500-600 people since March … something that would’ve been IMPOSSIBLE in our old facility.

I pray for unity, passion, wisdom, and vision in that Tuesday meeting!

    For the Kingdom,
    Fred McKinnon

wow 10 mil huh? Yeah, you always have to weigh the pros and cons.

For us 1.3 mil is IMPOSSIBLE. That’s exactly why I’m excited about it.

  13. 13 Bobby Gilles August 25, 2008 at 6:02 am

    Sounds very exciting!

I love that you reached back for a great Keith Green song. And the Vicki Beeching “Awesome God” is one of our staples here at Sojourn.

  14. 14 Mike Mahoney August 25, 2008 at 6:39 am

God bless you all for that vision, Billy. We were in the same boat for years and years (twenty five, to be exact!) We finally got out from under it several years ago. But we’re already planning a much-needed expansion.

You know the vision is from God when it’s too big for you. Read Nehemiah for encouragement!

  15. 15 klampert August 25, 2008 at 7:22 am

  16. 16 dorothy (vicar of vibe) August 25, 2008 at 7:26 am

I think you should have a bunch of smooth stones at your meeting. A tangible reminder of the possibility for people to take home…

  17. 17 Rob Petrini August 25, 2008 at 8:56 am

Keep strong mate, for God, all things are possible. And I love Dorothy’s idea of bringing stones to the meetig! Tangible reminders are always a good thing.

    Praying for you all.

  18. 18 Jeff M. Miller August 25, 2008 at 10:08 am

Awesome testimony Billy. I love it when people catch a vision from God and go forward with passion. That’s when things happen.

Sounds like it was a Keith Green-y day for us both.

Billy – this will be journey of epic proportions… But our Father loves to be standing just around the corner in these journeys to great us as we walk towards him!

I know he is in these journeys. Our Camp ( ) is in the middle of one. We are simple gang of ragamuffins, foolish enough to believe that he said:” “kids need a safe place”. Will you walk towards me I will give you what you need to fulfill my dream… He has given us close to ten million dollars for our property and for improvements… He will do the same for you. Walk in faith.

  21. 21 chris August 26, 2008 at 8:19 am

Have you all ever thought selling your building and going portable?

  22. 22 Billy Chia August 26, 2008 at 10:48 am

Thanks for all the encouragement. I love hearing the stories of how you guys have met challenges.

We’ve pretty much thought of everything. The idea here is not simply to solve the problem – there are many easy ways to do that. The goal is to chase after God’s Holy Spirit – to run with all our might after Him.
